CDE Registration Form

2022 Kitchen Infrastructure and Training (KIT) Funds

Nutrition Services Division

The California Department of Education (CDE) Nutrition Services Division (NSD) is administering the noncompetitive KIT funds to all eligible local educational agencies (LEAs), defined in Section 132, Chapter 52, Statutes of 2022 (created by AB 181) as a school district, county office of education, or charter school sponsoring the School Breakfast Program (SBP) or National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Funding allotments will be distributed to NSLP and SBP sponsors on behalf of all eligible sites served by the sponsor.

This opt-in registration form must be submitted by an authorized representative of the agency–the individual currently on file in the Child Nutrition Information and Payment System (CNIPS).
If an eligible agency submits more than one application, the most recent version received may be used to determine funding.
The purpose of these funds is to provide statewide funding for kitchen equipment, kitchen infrastructure upgrades, additional staff work related to California’s Universal School Meals program, food service staff training to enhance the offering and promotion of nutritious foods in the meal programs, and to encourage the preparation of school meals on site using local, fresh ingredients. Funding allotments will be distributed through county offices of education to NSLP and SBP sponsors on behalf of all eligible sites served by the sponsor.
The 2022 KIT Funds will be allocated as follows, each eligible agency that submits a completed registration form by the deadline:

  • Will receive a base amount of $100,000.
  •
  • Will receive an additional amount proportionate to the number of total reimbursable meals claimed during October 2021.
  •
  • May receive an additional amount, based on the total number of reimbursable meals claimed during October 2021, for committing to, and attesting that, at least 40 percent of reimbursable NSLP and SBP meals, including the entrée and grains, prepared each week, beginning in the 2023–24 school year, shall be freshly prepared onsite meals.
  •
  • “Freshly prepared onsite meal” means food service in which the preparation of meals takes place on a daily basis at the site of consumption or in a central kitchen, using whole ingredients in their most basic, minimally processed form, or cooking with both fresh, raw, whole ingredients and ready-made products.
  •
  • The CDE anticipates that there will be approximately $240 million to award for these purposes. Final funding amounts are dependent on the total number of reimbursable meals claimed during October 2021 and the number of agencies that elect to participate. To roughly estimate the amount of funding you may receive, assuming full participation, multiply the number of total meals claimed in October 2021 by $2.83.  Note: This is only an estimation tool; the CDE provides no assurance of actual funding amount.
  • It is important to review the CDE NSD 2022 KIT Funding web page prior to completing this registration form.

    Agency Information

Please provide one or both of the following identification numbers to submit this application:
Please provide the required agency identification information below:

Vendor Number may include 5 digits and a letter Z at the end (example 12345Z) OR 4 digits with a letter C or A at the beginning and a letter Z at the end (example A1234Z, C1234Z)
Is your sponsoring school food authority a charter sponsor that only serves charter schools?
To help ensure prompt payment, please enter the charter number for one of your sites. If you have multiple charter numbers, you can choose the oldest charter number, but any number will help. If you do not know any charter numbers, you can find them in the School Directory by searching under the charter site's official name as it was registered with the California Department of Education. The charter number is a four-digit code and is located about two-thirds of the way down the page. NOTE: the charter number is different from the CDS code, the Federal Charter District ID, and NCES/Federal School ID.

If not listed, first ensure you are searching for the name as it appears in CNIPS. LEAs can view their CNIPS sponsor name in the upper right-hand corner of their application packet in CNIPS. Some LEAs may have a different name than the name used in the CNIPS. For example, a charter school site name is often different than the CNIPS sponsor name. Your sponsor name will not show on the drop-down list if you claimed zero NSLP or SBP meals in October 2021. If you cannot locate your sponsor name, please enter your agency's business name below:
